Artificial intelligence

“The AI train has left the station – UK businesses must decide how fast they want to travel.”

STEVE RIGBY

Steve sees the potential of artificial intelligence to transform productivity, economic growth and public services, helping people and organisations achieve more with fewer constraints.

Innovation and prosperity depend on the ability to adapt to technological change. Yet while Britain has many of the ingredients needed to succeed in the AI era, adoption remains uneven and investment in the infrastructure and skills required to support long-term leadership must accelerate.

Both government and business must work together to ensure AI's benefits are broadly shared. By equipping people with the skills to adapt, supporting innovation and maintaining public trust, AI can become a powerful driver of growth, opportunity and national prosperity.

Upcoming research

Future Employment Trends

Led by the University of Birmingham, this research will explore how AI is changing future skills needs, job roles and employment opportunities, with a particular focus on young people in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The report will assess employer demand, identify key challenges in the transition from education to work, and set out recommendations to support access to higher-skilled, higher-paid and more secure employment.

AI-Enabled Workplaces

Led by the Learning and Work Institute, this research will examine how AI is transforming workplaces and the implications for workers and employers across the UK. Focusing on the risk of lower-skilled workers being left behind, the report will explore how AI may reshape job requirements and identify the skills and training needed to help people thrive in an increasingly AI-enabled economy.
