Artificial intelligence
“The AI train has left the station – UK businesses must decide how fast they want to travel.”
STEVE RIGBY
Steve sees the potential of artificial intelligence to transform productivity, economic growth and public services, helping people and organisations achieve more with fewer constraints.
Innovation and prosperity depend on the ability to adapt to technological change. Yet while Britain has many of the ingredients needed to succeed in the AI era, adoption remains uneven and investment in the infrastructure and skills required to support long-term leadership must accelerate.
Both government and business must work together to ensure AI's benefits are broadly shared. By equipping people with the skills to adapt, supporting innovation and maintaining public trust, AI can become a powerful driver of growth, opportunity and national prosperity.
Research
Future Employment Trends
Led by City-REDI at the University of Birmingham and commissioned by The Rigby Foundation, this research explores the changing employment landscape for young people in Birmingham and the West Midlands. It examines how economic change, artificial intelligence and evolving employer expectations are reshaping skills needs and entry-level opportunities, and sets out practical recommendations to improve young people's transition from education into secure employment.
AI-Enabled Workplaces
Led by the Learning and Work Institute, this research will examine how AI is transforming workplaces and the implications for workers and employers across the UK. Focusing on the risk of lower-skilled workers being left behind, the report will explore how AI may reshape job requirements and identify the skills and training needed to help people thrive in an increasingly AI-enabled economy.
Making AI Work for Britain
As the UK considers the next phase of its AI strategy, Project Sail explores how a policy reset can ensure AI delivers lasting economic and social value. While significant progress has been made in AI infrastructure, investment and adoption, emerging challenges around technology access, productivity and workforce disruption require a fresh approach. The project will develop practical policy recommendations to strengthen UK AI capability, support economic growth and ensure the benefits of AI are shared across businesses, workers and public services.
